Twisted pair cabling is one or a number of pairs of independently inslutated copper wires twisted together in pairs.
These wires are twisted around each other and insultated with a dielectric polymeric compound. Most applications require two wires to transmit data.
The twist helps eliminate noise created by electromagnetic interferance (EMI) and resists external interferance.
The twist also minimises signals leaking from adjacent wires in the cable called crosstalk.
These cables come with a braided, wired mesh that encases each pair of insulated copper wires.
The shielding is usually made of aluminum foil, around the conductors to isolate the conductors and improve the cables' resistance to noise and signal interference.
Shielded Twisted Pair (STP) cables are more expensive that Unshieled Twisted Pair (UTP) cables. Shielded cables support data transfer rates of 10 to 100 megabits per second (Mbps).
